Berner Oberland
The higher seated regions of the Swiss Kanton Bern are called the Bernese Oberland. It is mainly the regions around the lakes of Thun and Brienz and the mountains and valleys south of the lakes. Each of the larger valleys in the Bernese Oberland has its own history. It was Napoleon in 1798, who made the region the Bernese Oberland by creating the Kanton Oberland. Thun was made the Oberland-capital in that time. In 1803, Napoleon united the kantons Oberland and Bern, thus creating the Bernese Oberland.
